Below is an extract from a recent interview conducted with Paula, the founder of Projeto for Designhide.com
How did you start Projeto? Could you have envisioned what Projeto is today?
I’ve always been a bit of an art lover, preferring the paintbrush to the cricket bat! However with everyone telling me that art has no money, I went into Retail Management. After a few years of being beaten across the head, I decided to venture into web design and it has blossomed ever since. I never thought that I would be at the point I am at now with it.
What do you think the most important steps are to creating a successful project with happy clients?
Honesty. I charge honest prices, set honest deadlines and am honest with my clients at all times. I do not believe in adding fuss and nonsense within the business just because that is what everybody else does.
What tools/applications do you get the most use from?
I have my trusted Waccy (Wacom Intuos A4) and the Adobe Creative Suite by me at all times. But in all honesty, if someone took away my computer speakers, I think I would fall to the floor in despair. I have music on 24/7 as it keeps the tempo up.
What's the atmosphere in your office/studio?
I have a fantastic office in my home which usually just houses me, as the Projeto team is spread around the world. It is very calm and serene in my office, with a beautiful view of the countryside and the sounds of the lambs calling for their mummies!
What's your 'design philosophy.'
“Start a Revolution” is our philosophy. Why stick with the norm? Not just in design, but as a company. So many businesses think they can’t have a good looking website because it is too expensive, but Projeto turns that on its head and offers creative and original websites and most importantly, an understanding of small businesses and the obstacles they come across, all at a honest and fair price.
Is it better to sacrifice functionality in order to meet specific design goals, or design goals in order to attain specific functionality?
Coming from a retail background and as Projeto deals with mainly e-Commerce websites, I would always sacrifice design in order to meet functionality. It is completely pointless developing a site that is visually amazing, but so difficult to navigate that the client doesn’t receive a single order. At the end of the day, my clients have come to me to develop a site in order to sell their product...which is what I am going to do!
How do you delegate responsibility among your team?
I have to admit that I am a bit of a control freak, so I manage all projects and client communication. I also design all the sites. I then have Adeel and Andrew, my php code monkeys and Sakit and Lee, who have just started with the company who code my designs (WC3 compliant of course!)
